Condolences, Learn Tai Chi, Holiday Break & 2013 VUB Modules

Condolences: Our hearts go out to the grieving families in Newtown, CT, and those touched across the nation.  Military families also deal with the hardship of having to explain sad events to their children; we can join together to help each other through the difficult times.
Here are two good parenting sites that address those difficult topics: http://childdevelopmentinfo.com/parenting/talk-to-kids-violence.shtml or http://www.timetotalk.org/military/
Here is a useful guide for parents or caregivers to help children process traumatic events: http://www.aboutourkids.org/articles/helping_children_feel_safe
Please see the VA’s National Center for PTSD for valuable tips on how to recognize and treat children’s PTSD at: http://www.ptsd.va.gov/public/pages/ptsd-children-adolescents.asp

Over the holiday break, learn something new!  Tai Chi is an ancient practice with reported health benefits including improving flexibility, reducing pain, and relaxation/stress management.  If you are interested in learning more about Tai Chi, here is an informative website: http://www.taichichih.org/ Tai Chi classes are available at many community recreation centers and community colleges (like Yavapai College) as well as spas and studios – so there are lots of ways to learn.

Northern Arizona Veterans Upward Bound and Yavapai College will be closed for the holiday break beginning 12/19/12 and will reopen on 1/2/13.  Please use our blog, Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/NAZVUB), and YouTube channel (http://www.youtube.com/user/YCVUB) to search for any resources over the break – and give us suggestions on what resources you find useful.  We’ll resume registering for our Spring modules that begin on January 14, as soon as we return.  We wish you restful and healthy holidays and a fulfilling new year.

HirePurpose, Family History, Criminalizing Suicide

The Video of the Week highlights HirePurpose, a website that helps veterans match their military experience with civilian careers: http://youtu.be/kFLa8C4gaOA  Connect with this free resource for veterans at: http://www.hirepurpo.se/ to do career assessments, see exclusive job postings, and re-purpose your resume.

Family history is a great discussion topic for the holidays; see this article for some great ideas of how to keep your family memories alive: http://www.aplaceformom.com/blog/preserve-your-family

Food for thought: An article on one blog about military suicide was thought-provoking.  The article, by psychiatrist and veteran, Dr. Daniel Amen, asks whether criminalizing suicide will reduce suicide attempts or discourage some from asking for help.  Dr. Amen’s blog also deals with a lot of research on brain injury, ADHD, and other interesting topics, and he has a free newsletter.  Read the article for yourself (and comment, if you choose) at: http://www.amenclinics.com/?p=6317&option

PAVE your Employment Pathway, Insomnia Alternative Treatments, Health Insurance

The Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA) has initiated a new effort to help disabled veterans become successfully employed through PAVE: http://youtu.be/LXc0KX9h2aY

See the article for more information about Paving Access for Veterans Employment at: www.operationpave.org

Do you suffer from insomnia?  Here’s an article from a military aggregator about using Reiki, a form of energy work sometimes used in combination with massage, to help with PTSD and insomnia: http://reikiinmedicine.org/clinical-practice/reiki-military-ptsd/  You can find a reputable practitioner in your area, or you can learn Reiki and practice it on yourself at home.  Other do-at-home options for insomnia include meditation, yoga, and other exercises that help with your beneficial hormones like endorphins and serotonin – you can find instruction/examples on YouTube.  Talk to your healthcare provider about your best options to help you get a good night's sleep.  Here’s one example of a free ‘Sleep Talkdown’ video (don’t listen to this while driving!): http://youtu.be/8TDcGYmEgyM

Recently discharged veterans can obtain healthcare through the VA, but many don’t, and remain uninsured.  See this website: http://www.va.gov/healthbenefits/ and this article for more information on how to get connected: http://www.daytondailynews.com/news/news/uninsured-rate-hi

Suicide Prevention, Healthy Ideas, Finance Resolutions

Today’s Video entreats us all to leave no one behind: http://youtu.be/UfwL7livod4

Military suicide rates have been making news for a while now, and there are many resources, but there is also dangerous misinformation out there.  Did you know that the rates quoted only include certain types of military suicides, actual veteran suicide rates are much higher, as many as 18 per day?  Did you know that most veteran suicides are not by those with combat experience?  Military/veteran suicides are still lower than the civilian rate, but the gap is narrowing; and if combat is not the reason underlying them, they are not likely to decrease when war ends.  Important facts are included in this article, and may help you save a life: http://www.rollcall.com/news/rise_of_military_suicides_driven

Holidays are sometimes more stressful for people, and the fewer hours of daylight can be hard for some of us to deal with also.  If you want to jump start your healthy habits, here’s a free online magazine with helpful ideas: http://experiencelife.com/

Another reason for holiday blues is the annual post-holiday realization that you’ve spent more than you wanted.  To help get your budget in shape or repair your credit, see this article from military.com at: http://www.military.com/money/personal-finance/credit-debt

Save a Life, Tinnitus, PTSD, Paying for College

This is an interesting experience, more than a Video of the Week, because it is interactive.  If you choose the wrong action in this ‘Save A Life’ simulator, the patient dies: http://www.heartrescuenow.com/  If you didn’t do very well, CPR and AED classes are offered in most communities through hospitals, Red Cross, and fire departments, and also through Yavapai College.

The most common disability among veterans is tinnitus, a persistent or intermittent inner sound often due to ear damage – it is also diagnosed in 10% of the general population.  Tinnitus affects not only hearing, but sleep, concentration, mental and physical health, and a host of other activities of daily life.  For more information on tinnitus and treatments, see: http://www.va.gov/health/NewsFeatures/20110524a.asp and the helpful links at: http://www.ncrar.research.va.gov/ForVets/TinnitusSites.asp

PTSD News: Did you know that female veterans may be twice as likely to suffer from PTSD as their male counterparts?  A new study suggests different brain/learning paths between the genders may be the reason, see the article at: http://www.sfgate.com/health/article/PTSD-s-effect-on-female-vet The increase in PTSD diagnoses has prompted multiple new studies, attempting to deal with both the causes and potential treatments. Gender is an additional factor in the disease process and symptoms, though both genders of veterans report similar initial denial of their PTSD issues, and avoidance of treatment for fear of appearing weak.  The connection between PTSD and homelessness of veterans is discussed in this sobering article: http://www.salon.com/2012/12/04/majority_of_homeless

Not sure what your next steps should be for your education?  Which school might be the best value for you?  The Consumer Finance Protection Bureau has a site to help you compare net costs of various colleges at: http://www.consumerfinance.gov/paying-for-college/  A good precaution is to avoid student loans as much as possible, and apply for federal financial aid, GI Bill, and scholarships first.  Also consider student employment, federal or VA work study, or part-time employment that will work with your school schedule.  Some employers still offer educational benefits, and if you are a displaced or unemployed veteran, there are programs through DES and the VA that might assist you also.

The Video of the Week is about VetNet: http://youtu.be/k0BJMj5ZNzQ
Veteran job search networks are popping up everywhere, so check out the Google+ VetNet at: https://plus.google.com/u/0/+VetNetBasic/posts There are virtual and live chat events, workshops about resume writing and how to translate your military specialties into civilian language, and more.  The VFW sponsors this site: www.vetjobs.com, which has helpful mini-tutorials on how to find a job, job fairs and job listings, and a secure place to post your resume.  Here’s a professional networking site, dedicated to active duty and soon-to-transition military members: https://www.rallypoint.com/

Veterans interested in careers in Information Technology may be interested in this article about SAP training: http://www.sap.com/corporate-en/sustainability/corporate-social-responsibility/veterans.epx

If you aren’t comfortable with a computer, consider taking the VUB free modules to help you increase your confidence in your computer abilities.  Over 80% of jobs today require some computer experience, and job searches and applications are much easier if you know how to navigate the web.  See more about VUB eligibility at www.yc.edu/vub or call 928-717-7686.

If you are searching for a job, and prefer an in-person approach, here are some local community resources you might find useful:
*Goodwill Industries at Mingus/Main in Cottonwood has a Job Connection program that will help you with your resume, cover letter, interviewing skills and more.  Goodwill also has two locations in Prescott on Lee Blvd and on Iron Springs Rd. (and many more throughout AZ.)  They also have a Job Club with a free lunch – call 634-1397 to reserve your spot.
*DES (at Main/Cherry St. in Cottonwood) has weekly job skills workshops on Fridays from 10-11:00 through Lillian Kessel, topic is resumes and cover letters; you can reserve your spot at 928-634-3337.  Similar services are available at Prescott and Prescott Valley DES offices.  Lillian's EOC program is a sister to VUB, helping people with financial aid applications; she meets with students in the Verde Valley and Prescott/Prescott Valley areas.  Call 634-6569 for an appointment.
*Don’t forget networking to help you locate job possibilities; whether that is a veteran-serving organization, social services, friends/family, or clubs/interest groups.  Volunteering and job shadowing also have great value in helping you decide on a new career or connecting with others who may know of job opportunities.

December Dates: In addition to those commonly remembered, like Pearl Harbor Day (12/7), another military date to note is the National Guard’s 376th Birthday (yes, like the Navy, the National Guard pre-dates the establishment of the USA because it was created in colonial times on 12/13/1636!)

More choices of Veterans’ organizations – If you are a Vietnam era veteran, here is another site/organization for your review – see if it fits your needs: http://vva.org/

If you’re already a student veteran, the national conference for SVA is in Orlando, FL on Jan 3-6th.  VA Director Shineski will be a featured speaker at this networking event; for more information, see: http://www.studentveterans.org/?page=2013NatCon

Coming Home, Finding your Place, Home Protection

Joyful homecomings video - just in time for the holidays: http://youtu.be/pXsYe_q89Qg

Comfort Cards: When filling out your Christmas cards this year, take a card and send to this address – say something encouraging to someone who has given so much already, and is far from home this holiday:
A Recovering American Soldier
c/o Walter Reed Army Medical Center
6900 Georgia Avenue
NW Washington, DC 20307-5001

The importance of finding your place: There are many veterans’ organizations, serving a variety of purposes, and each with their own appeal.  Several veterans have mentioned that they didn’t feel comfortable with the veterans’ organizations that they had a choice of joining in their towns.  Many people are familiar with the American Legion (http://www.legion.org/) or the VFW (http://vfw.org/) but sometimes, OIF/OEF veterans prefer the tone and activities of the IAVA (Iraq & Afghanistan Veterans of America), which has web-based resources/social networking.  Choose whichever associations provide you with the camaraderie and activities you enjoy; if you are/or plan to be a student, don’t forget to join your local Student Veterans Association also.

Highlight on IAVA: PSA what is IAVA: http://youtu.be/dcirQxfp3j8
You can find out more about IAVA at www.iava.org and consider joining or becoming a supporter.  From their website: “Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) is the nation’s first and largest nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to improving the lives of our newest veterans and their families. Through innovative health, education, employment and community programs, IAVA strives to build an empowered generation of veterans who provide sustainable leadership for our country and their local communities. IAVA was recently awarded the highest rating - 4 stars - from Charity Navigator, America’s largest independent charity evaluator. Learn more, get involved and join the over 200,000 Member Veterans and Civilian Supporters now at www.IAVA.org.”

Rural Health Day, VOSB, Veteran Job Resources, Women Veterans' Organizations

November 15 is National Rural Health Day, according to the Veterans Health Administration.  The VHA has a rural health newsletter that shows many of their initiatives to support veterans’ health in areas that do not have a VA Hospital or Community Based Outpatient Clinic, such as partnerships with local health providers, training for local communities, and more.  See their November newsletter at: http://www.ruralhealth.va.gov/news/

Here’s the Video of the Week at: http://youtu.be/C5KbfN_20MU about the Yavapai College Small Business Development Center and how they can help you be successful in your own business.

Did you know that 10% of American small businesses are veteran-owned?  Veterans are 45% more likely to own their own business than non-veterans.  There are 2.4 million VOSB (Veteran Owned Small Businesses) with $1 Trillion in receipts, according to the RAO Bulletin highlight.  The Small Business Administration (SBA) assists veterans with training, mentoring, and access to funding through loans and government contracts.  Even before separation, active-duty military members have benefited from educational opportunities too.  For more information, don’t forget your Arizona Small Business Development Center (see: http://www.azsbdc.net/) or local Chamber of Commerce, or see the SBA at: http://www.sba.gov/vets

Business News Daily discusses the increase in veteran jobs available and a newly launched website to help veterans find jobs and/or start their own business at: http://www.businessnewsdaily.com/3406-website-helps-vet  Another article suggests 50 skills you want to list on your resume at: http://www.businessnewsdaily.com/2135-job-skills-resume.html

The RAO Bulletin highlighted many women veterans’ organizations, representing different branches of service, profession, or service era.  Kudos were also given to two all-women American Legion posts in Kansas, who are addressing the differing concerns of women veterans, like childcare during VA healthcare visits and the changing roles of women in the military.  Here are some of the organizations mentioned:

National Roll Call, Get Skills to Work, VUB Free Modules, Perfect Major

The National Roll Call program was held at 92 campuses and communities this past week, to honor the names of our service people who have given their lives during the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.  At the Verde Valley campus ceremony (photos above), the Rimrock High School Color Guard presented the flags, then County Supervisor Chip Davis and Dean Perey began reading, followed by students, employees, and community members, until the last name was read.  The ceremony and moment of silence were timed with the Prescott campus and campuses nationwide.  Thank you to all who participated at these events.

Get Skills to Work is a program to match military skill sets with manufacturing jobs and energize American industry. See the Video of the Week at: http://bcove.me/mym3ilgv and the homepage at: http://www.getskillstowork.org/  A more detailed video about the skills program can be found at "Right Skills Now" at: http://youtu.be/lUaiKRDLUBY

You may have heard the term “military-friendly” employer – here’s a searchable website that puts those employers at your fingertips: http://www.militaryfriendly.com/

Northern Arizona Veterans Upward Bound is registering for our Spring session of free pre-college modules, including our Math Insanity accelerated course January 2-7, and courses in Veteran Student Success, College Writing Skills, Spanish, Literature and more (Jan. 14-Mar. 8.)  See www.yc.edu/vub to see if you qualify.

Happy 237th birthday to the Marine Corps!

Cenage posted this article with good links for students who have trouble selecting a major: http://www.cengagebrain.com/blog/2012/10/picking-the-perfect-major  The most valuable tip in here is that your major doesn’t define you or your career, you do (skill set, experience, education – the whole package.)

Veterans, Military Spouses, MST Support

Veterans Day:  Who are our veterans?  This Veterans Day, take a moment to pause and reflect on our veterans and active duty military members, and their families!
As of 2011, there were 21.5 million veterans in the U.S., of those: 1.6 million were female, 17.2 million were Caucasian, 2.3 million were African American, 1.2 million were Hispanic/Latino, and slightly under half a million were either native American, Pacific Islander, or Asian.
There were 9.2 million age 65 or older, and 1.8 million under age 35.
Time of service: there were 7.5 million Vietnam era, 5.1 million Gulf era (1990-present), 2.4 million Korean era, 1.8 million WWII, and 5.4 million served in peacetimes.
Where they live: the states with highest numbers of veterans are California, Florida, and Texas; but the highest percentage of state populations that are veterans are Alaska (14%), Maine, Montana, Virginia, and Wyoming (12% each.)
(Facts are from: http://www.census.gov/newsroom/releases/archives/facts)

Military spouses may uproot themselves and their children every time their spouse is relocated or deployed; if they are in a profession that requires credentials like a nurse, teacher, or a real estate broker, that causes problems.  Becoming credentialed in a new state costs money and time before the spouse can become employed, causing a hardship on the family that is already giving so much.  Joining Forces has asked every state to pass legislation to ease this re-credentialing burden, and Arizona does!  To see how your state measures up, see: http://www.militaryfamily.org/feature-articles/26-states-support-military.html  To learn more about Joining Forces, see their blog at: http://www.whitehouse.gov/joiningforces/blog

The VA has posted helpful information for survivors of military sexual trauma (MST) at: https://www.myhealth.va.gov/mhv-portal-web/

Animal Heroes, Drop-out Prevention, Women Veteran Entrepreneurs

Current and past animal wartime heroes are highlighted in an article honoring the most recent recipient of the Dickin Medal of Honor, a dog named Theo (photo from Stripes.com).  But horses, pigeons, and one cat also have served in the line of duty and been honored for bravery. See the article at: http://www.stripes.com/news/photos-army-dog

The statistics are disheartening, that 88% of new student veterans currently drop out of college, but there are resources available to make a successful transition, including the Veterans Upward Bound program and many veteran-serving organizations on campuses and off.  See more details at: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/10/25/veterans-college-drop and then reach out so you can get all the help you need to graduate successfully from the college of your choice.  See the YCVUB YouTube channel to help you get started at: http://www.youtube.com/user/ycvub

Wishes, Turkeys, Education Benefits, Jobs, Navy Birthday

The U.S. Army granted a TX teen’s “Make-a-Wish” to be an Army nurse for a day, see the inspiring story at: http://www.military.com/daily-news/2012/10/19/teen-gets-wish

If you are interested in donating funding, food, or volunteering for Heroes to Hometowns - Turkeys for Troops program, please see the information at: http://azheroestohometowns.org/2012/10/13/turkeys-to-troops-2012/  There are pick-up spots for veterans-in-need in Flagstaff and Prescott (and other parts of the state) on November 4th.

A proposal to amend the Post 9/11 GI Bill to allow spouses of those killed in action to receive the same education benefits as their children would was reported in Military.com at: http://militaryadvantage.military.com/2012/10/spouses-of-heroes-education-act/  The current law does not allow Spouses of Heroes to receive full benefits; the amendment is supported by many military and veteran associations and the SVA.

Additional education-related issues concern in-state vs. out-of-state tuition being charged for veterans, which has resulted in over-charging veterans with out-of-pocket costs.  See the full article at: http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2012/10/22/14565761-home-but-not-a-resident

Military.com has a Veteran Jobs blog, with advice for job seekers, information on military-friendly employers, and much more.  Here is a good article on answering difficult interview questions: http://jobsforveterans.military.com/1172/answer-bad-interview-questions

Horses, Job Fair, High Tech Jobs, Tattoos

Animals are often a part of healing for people with a variety of health conditions, and veterans can benefit from working with animals during their transition back to civilian life too.  Healing with Horses is the topic of our Video of the Week, shared by the paper.li aggregator.  See the video about this Minnesota program for women veterans at: http://youtu.be/NfqdKa-gy-Q

Home Depot will offer 100 Job Fairs for Veterans nationwide at selected stores on October 27th, where their HR professionals with help Veterans with their resumes, job searches, and interview techniques.  Locations in Arizona include Surprise and Tucson, or you can get information from them if you are unable to attend in-person, see the link at: http://www.homedepotmilitary.com/

Wanted: 100,000 Veterans to train for high tech jobs!  Stars and Stripes reports that GE, Alcoa, Lockheed Martin, and Boeing will team up with the Manufacturing Institute to begin training immediately, see the full article at: http://www.stripes.com/news/new-initiative-aims-to-train-100k-veterans

Let’s chat about tattoos: You may have heard that there are some jobs that you can’t get if you have a tattoo, whether it is military-related or not.  So, here’s some helpful information: http://jobsearch.about.com/b/2011/01/12/tattoos-and-your-job-search.htm has a list of employers that don’t mind body art (tattoos, piercings), and here’s an article that talks about creative ways to make them less obvious during an interview: http://www.snagajob.com/resources/whats-my-tattoopiercinghairstyle-got-to-do-with-it/  This topic came up in the RAO Bulletin (another great aggregator), after a veteran was told he would never get a law enforcement job with his forearm tattoos (which read “Army” and “Veteran”), see the source article at: http://www2.tbo.com/news/news/2012/oct/05/8/memeto1-tattoos-can-cuff-police-career-ar-522546/

Of Heroes and Villains...

Here’s a special story about two heroes: one with two legs and one with four.  The two-legged hero, Cpl. Jason Dunham, gave his life to save his fellow Marines; the four-legged hero has his own combat-related disability and has found a safe haven with the grieving family of Cpl. Dunham.  Read the full story at: http://www.lifewithdogs.tv/2012/10/millitary-dog-suffering-from-ptsd

The paper.li aggregator provided the Video of the Week about PTSD and meditation, another hero’s story at: http://youtu.be/UV05FQ6aBcA

Support your local Student-Veterans on Saturday, October 20, 10:00 am: Veterans Connection Club  Car Wash Fundraiser is at  201 Grove Avenue at Footework Auto License and Title Service, in Prescott
This premium wash includes vacuuming and a mini detailing service. All this for the reasonable price of $10.00 so please come out and support your local veterans and their families by contributing to this Yavapai College Veterans Club.

And now for the villain, there are Arizona connections to the arrest of another Veteran charity scam-artist.  The RAO Bulletin reported that a Harvard graduate and lawyer, who was wanted since the 1980s for stealing from his AZ clients, has been found.  He was arrested in 2010, identifying himself as “Mr. X,” but this month his true identity was discovered to be John Cody.  He swindled over $100 million in a con involving the phony Navy Veteran’s Association.  The funds were used for his own benefit and for campaign donations to access top-level Republican lawmakers, with whom he enjoyed being photographed, including President G. W. Bush, AZ Senator McCain, and Speaker Boehner, according to the source article (http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/feds-id-fraudster-behind-veterans-charity-scam-article-1.1172640)   There are new scams every minute involving Veteran’s issues, so be wary and never give personal information or funding without investigating first.  Several charity watch organizations (like http://www.charitynavigator.org/) rate by the percent of donations given to intended beneficiaries vs. administration expenses.

Veterans Court, Hometown Hero, Disability Awareness

CBS News highlighted one Texas Veterans Court program in a very moving Video of the Week at: http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=50133122n&tag=contentBody;storyMediaBox
Cries for help come in a variety of forms for veterans returning from combat, committing a crime is one of them.  According to SAMHSA, veterans in the prison system are more likely to serve longer sentences, despite being less likely to have any prior criminal offenses (http://www.samhsa.gov/co-occurring/topics/military-justice/veterans-justice-system.aspx)  Blogger’s note: There are two Veterans Courts in Arizona, located in Phoenix and Tucson.

Spotted in Cottonwood, AZ by proudarmymomvv: The “Honk if you support our troops” van – please thank them if you see them!  We’re grateful your hero is home.

It’s Disability Awareness month, and the Library of Congress has highlighted the contributions of many disabled Americans at: http://www.loc.gov/disabilityawareness/  For the LOC Veterans History Project interviews, see: http://www.loc.gov/vets/stories/ex-war-disabledvets.html

Resource for Employers and Job Seekers: The Department of Labor has launched a site to help employers find ways to better meet the needs of disabled employees, see the press release at: http://www.dol.gov/opa/media/press/odep/ODEP20122014.htm#.UHxTIlF36Sl This site is also a good resource for job-seekers, and emphasizes challenging employment situations, such as single-parents, at-risk youth, and ex-offenders needing flexible working situations.  The Toolkit can be found at: http://www.dol.gov/odep/workplaceflexibility/#.UHxUO1F36Sk

October is National Bullying Prevention Month.  Bullying affects not only children, but adults in the workplace, and college students. Nearly 50% of college students reported being bullied or cyberbullied by a fellow student or a professor, or being the perpetrator themselves, according to: http://health.usnews.com/health-news/college-students-bullying Everyone plays a role in bullying prevention.  Three things* to start with are:
Spending meaningful time discussing how to resolve problems with your children/students/or coworkers
Focusing on strengths, emphasizing positive possibilities, building bridges with others
Present your best self, be a role model/support to others, and address bullying immediately by open discourse
*These tips were adapted from: http://www.howtolearn.com/2012/09/ways-to-end-bullying
