Here’s a well-written article about the effects of wilderness/nature/hiking on Veterans with PTS at: http://www.tetonvalleynews.net/news/warriors-retreat-effects-of-the-tetons-on-pts/article_88a5f056-1837-11e4-bd51-001a4bcf887a.html

If you know someone who could benefit from Adult Basic Education, here’s a great explanation how ABE expands job opportunities: http://www.ed.gov/edblogs/ovae/2014/08/20/renewing-economic-opportunity-for-all/  The article is in celebration of Adult Education Week Sept 22-28 (#AEFLWeek); for more information on opportunities at Yavapai College see: www.yc.edu/abe and for Veterans see www.yc.edu/vub

Students at Yavapai College with any kind of disability may choose whether or not to seek academic accommodations, such as extended test-taking time, note takers, or assistive technology through our Disability Resources Department at: www.yc.edu/disabilityresources   You can learn more about disability rights at: http://www.ed.gov/blog/2014/09/know-it-2-own-it-teaching-and-learning-about-disability-rights/ which celebrates the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) – and you’re invited to share stories of overcoming disabilities at their blog with hastag: #know2own.

Happy Air Force B-day, Virtual Job Fair 9/24, Recovery Event in Cottonwood 9/20, October Mental Health Awareness Week

Happy Birthday to the Air Force!

Can’t make it to a Veterans Job Fair?  You can come to the Virtual Job Fair Sept 24th – check it out: http://www.uschamberfoundation.org/event/virtual-job-fair

September 2014, marks the 25th year of National Recovery Month. Join in a free event in Cottonwood, at Garrison Park (100 Brian Mickelsen Pkwy) on Saturday, September 20 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM.  Cottonwood’s Recovery Day event helps spread the positive message that prevention works, treatment is effective and people can and do recover from substance abuse.

In 1990, the U.S. Congress established the first full week of October as Mental Illness Awareness Week in recognition of NAMI's efforts to raise mental illness awareness. Since then, mental health advocates across the country have joined with others in their communities to sponsor activities, large or small, for public education about mental illness.  Mental Illness affects 1 in 4 American adults. No one is alone in this fight. NAMI is there to help, see: http://ow.ly/y6tAJ  Here is a sharable link for free depression screening: http://www.HelpYourselfHelpOthers.org
