Anthem Veterans Memorial, Stellate Ganglion Block for PTSD, Veterans Homelessness Declines, ID Theft Alert

If you haven’t been by Anthem, AZ recently, there is a new Veterans Memorial there (pictured in the Anthem website.)  The placement and structure of the staggered blocks, representing the military branches, creates a mosaic of the Great Seal on November 11 each year.  See more at: http://www.onlineatanthem.com/anthem-veterans-memorial

Promising PTSD treatment offers relief to some:  Stellate Ganglion Block treatments may help to relieve some symptoms, such as sleeplessness and anxiety, according to this article in Military Times: http://www.militarytimes.com/story/military/2014/11/19/stellate-ganglion-block-ptsd-treatment/19230151/

From the RAO Bulletin: “The number of homeless veterans declined by 33 percent. As many as 1.8 million veterans still find themselves strapped when it comes to paying rent and utility bills. More than 30 percent of their income is used to cover those expenses, according to the latest report. And in 2012, 138,000 veterans stayed in a homeless shelter for one night.”

As we enter the holiday season, be especially aware of identity theft and scams directed at Veterans and military supporters.  Never give passwords or personal information out via phone or e-mail.  You can check to see if charities are trustworthy at several online ‘watchdog’ sites such as http://www.charitynavigator.org/

Can’t make it to a Veterans Job Fair?  You can come to the Virtual Job Fair Sept 24th – check it out: http://www.uschamberfoundation.org/event/virtual-job-fair

September 2014, marks the 25th year of National Recovery Month. Join in a free event in Cottonwood, at Garrison Park (100 Brian Mickelsen Pkwy) on Saturday, September 20 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM.  Cottonwood’s Recovery Day event helps spread the positive message that prevention works, treatment is effective and people can and do recover from substance abuse.

In 1990, the U.S. Congress established the first full week of October as Mental Illness Awareness Week in recognition of NAMI's efforts to raise mental illness awareness. Since then, mental health advocates across the country have joined with others in their communities to sponsor activities, large or small, for public education about mental illness.  Mental Illness affects 1 in 4 American adults. No one is alone in this fight. NAMI is there to help, see: http://ow.ly/y6tAJ  Here is a sharable link for free depression screening: http://www.HelpYourselfHelpOthers.org

Veterans and Parrots, Honor for All, Resume Engine, #GIBill Comparison Tool, Boots for Building

Here’s an interesting place where Veterans are volunteering to help parrots overcome abusive pasts, see: http://youtu.be/OF2W6tSSQGI   There are many organizations that can use your help with animals of all types: humane societies, wildlife and pet rescues, and fostering programs – why not help a furry (or feathered) friend along the way?

Alarmed by rising suicide rates, Vietnam Veteran Thomas Mahany started the Honor for All non-profit group to raise PTSD awareness and remove the stigma of seeking help.  See more about Honor for All at: http://www.honorforall.org/home/

Having trouble getting your resume just right?  Here’s a free tool to help you from Hiring our Heroes and ToyotaUSA at: https://www.resumeengine.org/

New Art of Hooping, July 28 Deadline to Register to Vote, Think Before You Ink

This hooping genius combines art and athleticism, martial arts, dance, and a lot of balance at: http://youtu.be/GLlpi-0_lB0

Deadline to register/or re-register to vote in the upcoming election is July 28.  You can do this at your county election office, MVD, most public libraries, and online at: https://servicearizona.com/webapp/evoter/selectLanguage  Need some incentive to participate?  Then see Sandra Day O’Connor explaining the importance of every Arizonan voting in this PSA: http://youtu.be/rFPSFR0Vbrs

There are pros and cons to any body art that can’t easily be changed or removed, so it pays to be an informed consumer.  Some employers, like law enforcement and health care, won’t allow any visible tattoos for new employees.  But after several soldiers ended up in the hospital, this article from Military.com shows health concerns, and the questions to ask before you get a tattoo at: http://www.stripes.com/questions-to-ask-before-you-get-a-tattoo-1.292437 and the CDC discusses other health-related matters at: http://blogs.cdc.gov/publichealthmatters/2012/08/the-hidden-dangers-of-getting-inked/  So, think (and research), before you ink!

Coming Back with Wes Moore, Mental Health First Aid Workshop, Engraving Names on The Wall, Farmland Movie, Graduation

A new PBS series follows Veterans as they rebuild their lives post-deployment – it begins May 13.  See the trailer at: http://youtu.be/VDlrGVr-waY  Perhaps this will address the civilian-military divide?  Check out Coming Back with Wes Moore and let us know what you think.

Do you know what to do when someone appears to be in mental distress?  A Free Workshop on Mental Health First Aid will help the public learn how to respond appropriately. The Mental Health Coalition and Verde Valley Guidance Clinic will offer this training at Christ Lutheran Church (Hwy 179 & Chapel Rd in Sedona) on Monday, June 16.  Space is limited, so please reserve your space at 928-282-1022.  For more information, see: http://www.sedona.biz/health/mental-health-first-aid-class-june-16/

As Memorial Day approaches, here is a well-written story about the engraving of new names on the Vietnam Memorial wall.  It’s something most of us probably didn't know was going on quietly in the background, as more MIA names were officially changed or old wounds finally took their toll.  See more at: http://www.stripes.com/the-poignant-process-of-etching-new-names-into-the-vietnam-wall-1.281939

Here is a trailer for a new movie called Farmland, that invites younger people to go into farming and ranching as a career.  The USDA and Farmer Veteran Coalition have initiatives that help Veterans become farmers.  See the video at: http://vimeo.com/90611052 and see these sources for more information about how you can get involved: http://www.outreach.usda.gov/veterans.htm and http://www.farmvetco.org/

Employment Toolkit for Veterans: Exploring, Planning, Connecting

Your Employment Toolkit:  If you are a career-changer, there are a lot of websites that can help you make your job or career search more efficient and effective.  Here’s a site from the Department of Labor with some handy tools to help you discover your career or job path:  http://www.dol.gov/findyourpath/

Bookmark Alert: Military.com and Monster.com team up to provide a toolkit of resources for Veterans seeking jobs at: http://www.military.com/veteran-jobs Topics include: Resume building, Military Skills Translator, Networking, Job Searching, and a listing of Career Expos.  More helpful sites: http://www.gijobs.com/,
http://www.va.gov/vetsinworkplace/, and
http://www.hireveterans.com/

When you think about where opportunities are for future employment, think about your skills and also about current challenges.  For example, energy independence is a hot topic for many reasons, so there are emerging career options.  Here are the top 5 careers in renewable energy development: http://money.howstuffworks.com/5-renewable-energy-careers and a link to the Veterans Green Jobs organization: http://veteransgreenjobs.org/ The American Council on Renewable Energy (ACORE) has lots of links to help you navigate the potential jobs at: http://www.acore.org/about/careers

Well, here’s another take – using your hobby to help you narrow down a good career or part-time job: http://www.militaryveteranjobnews.com/2014/05/6-hobbies-for-veterans-that-can-fund Like many career assessments, this article emphasizes that you should LIKE what you do for a living, and your hobbies are a good clue about what you enjoy and do well.

Lastly, if your career search leads you to college, you might as well get a toolkit for success there too!  Getting student-to-student tips for doing well in college is like having a guide who has the inside scoop: http://blog.cengage.com/successful-study-habits-tips-students-students/

Mental Health Awareness and Resources, RAO Bulletin, Vets Prevail Free Anonymous Online Counseling, DES Veterans Services, Health Care Careers

May’s Mental Health Awareness month has yielded some updated resource guides for communities.  Here is an article about a Verde Valley guide: http://www.sedona.biz/verde-valley-news/coalition-announces-mental-health-resources-guide/ The 32-page guide for the Verde Valley is a link on the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) organization’s website at: http://www.nami-sedona.org/

According to the RAO Bulletin, a program offering anonymous online counseling to Veterans has attracted many Veterans who preferred this option to utilizing VA mental health services.  “The Vets Prevail program, launched in 2012, provides self-assessments, treatment walk-throughs and peer counseling without requiring veterans to identify themselves,” according to a Military Times article.  See the full article at: http://www.militarytimes.com/article/20140414/NEWS/304140047/Anonymous-online-counseling-vets-shows-early-success This free anonymous counseling service is at: https://www.vetsprevail.org/

Veterans' Issues: There are a lot of sources for Veteran-related news on the Internet, one of my favorites is the Retiree Assistance Office (RAO) Bulletin referenced above, because it is clear, organized by topic, and thorough.  If you are interested in receiving the Bulletin in your e-mail, here are the instructions: “To subscribe first add the RAO email addee raoemo@sbcglobal.net   to your address book and/or white list. Then send your full name plus either the post/branch/chapter number of the fraternal military/government organization you are currently affiliated with (if any) “AND/OR” the city and state/country you reside in so your address can be properly positioned in the directory for future recovery. Subscription is open to all veterans, dependents, military/veteran support organizations, and media.”  Bulletins come out twice a month.

Looking for a Job?  Did you know that the Arizona Department of Economic Security has special services for Veterans?  “The primary objective of the Veterans Program is to develop and support programs that increase opportunities for veterans to obtain employment and job training in Arizona. Eligible veterans are entitled to receive priority services in job referrals and training by DES staff, as well as other employment-related services.”  See more at: https://www.azdes.gov/main.aspx?menu=258&id=2194

Career Highlight: Are you interested in a health care related field?  There are plenty of programs at Yavapai College, with free workshops to help you learn more about the options.  Nursing, Radiologic Technology, and several Allied Health certificates and degrees are offered.  For a full list of health and science-related programs, see: http://www.yc.edu/v5content/academics/divisions/sciences-and-health/default.htm

Managing Information Overload, Value of Higher Education, Verde Birding Festival, College Programs for Animal Lovers

TMI (too much information)?  Best blogs for military or veterans are reviewed at “Best of the Web” here: http://blogs.botw.org/Society/Military/Veterans/  Because too much information/opinion can be overwhelming, choose a few that you like to bookmark.  You can also create your own ‘news aggregator’ at: http://paper.li/ - this is like having an assistant scour through your selected sources to deliver only the topics you are interested in!  You just choose your topics, either pick your sources or choose ‘all’ and your e-mailed news comes to you, for free!

Is higher education ‘worth it?’  Here’s a PBS article on the financial aspects of higher education (although there are other reasons to keep learning): http://www.pbs.org/newshour/making-sense/will-your-college-degree-pay-for-itself-in-20-years/  Disclaimer: Note that those who attend community colleges pay significantly less for their tuition and there’s no mention of Student Veterans who receive Educational Benefits, so that is likely to make that ‘investment’ much smaller and the ‘payback’ much higher/quicker.  Check this tool out to see if Yavapai College might be a better return on your investment of time and money: http://www.yc.edu/webtools/forms/netpricecalc/

Looking for a fun outdoor family event this weekend?  Check out the Verde Valley Birding Festival at: http://birdyverde.org/ with free exhibits, and pre-registration/fees for guided birding walks.  This popular event is held annually at Dead Horse Ranch State Park (http://azstateparks.com/Parks/DEHO/)  Not sure what is going on in your area?  Bookmark your local newspaper, city, or Chamber of Commerce Facebook or websites to stay informed.

VA e-Benefits Portal Tour, Growing Careers for Veterans, Links for Veterans Interested in Agriculture

The VA e-Benefits portal has been improved, and a new video explains the changes at: http://youtu.be/_IFq_r3Nu4g

Focus on Food Production:  The May issue of National Geographic magazine has a very informative article on five steps we can take to improve our ability to feed the world at: http://www.nationalgeographic.com/foodfeatures/feeding-9-billion/  Those five steps, according to the article, are: freeze the amount of land used for agriculture, grow more on existing farms, use resources more effectively, shift diets, and reduce waste.

The Nat Geo article also mentions the aging of our nation’s farmers, which the USDA discussed on their blog, along with encouraging Veterans into the agricultural industry: http://www.outreach.usda.gov/veterans.htm

And the benefits for healing through ‘hands in dirt’ is discussed here: http://www.goodtherapy.org/blog/hands-on-healing-for-military-veterans-1113131
